In 2004 the number of Americans living in poverty increased to 37 million. This is the fourth consecutive year that the poverty rate in the U.S. has increased. In Minnesota On any given night, an estimated 8,600 people are homeless. This is nearly 2.5 times the estimate made in October 1991. It is estimated that over 3,000 of those homeless in Minnesota are children.
